sewn wojnarowicz
this is the piece i will submit to the show postcards from the edge. i have always admired and been inspired by david wojnarowicz who was an AIDS activist and a great artist. he died of AIDS in 1992. i decided i wanted to honor him in my work and this exhibition was a good opportunity for that.
the background in the piece is a repeated image of the AIDS virus, the reason wojnarowicz' s portrait is sewn to the background is because after reading his diaries and writings i felt he was a man in a lot of pain. at the same time, it references a photograph he took of himself with his lips sewn; this image can be seen here i'm very happy with this piece, it just flowed and basically did itself. i will donate it to the show but make another version, this time in a larger format. like g thinks, and i agree with him, this is the beginning of something new in my work (although not totally, it resembles the work i di about angels-fallen ones) and i'm really excited to see where it goes/takes me.
