... with my fly design, they looked awesome! i used them for g's birthday present and the lady in the post office first got confused, then angry, then finally accepted them when i told her she had nice hair. i'm going to get more done, i wish mailing letters was not a long lost art... maybe i'll organize a mail art project.

i need to get to work on this little black box, for an upcoming show, the arts in bushwick beta spaces show. i'm thinking it will be about new york, but not sure what about new york yet. the show is called 'boxed in and out', the show curator, mark weathers, has given each artist the same black box to work with. i like the simplicity and non-pretensiousness of the idea.
I also need to work on the frames for my watercolor comfort series for another upcoming show which i will post about soon. i want to paint the frames adding something to the piece, i don't want the frame to just be a frame but integrate more with the watercolor without becoming too distracting.
the 'zines' page in facebook posted a link to 'altoIDs, the curiously strong zine'. scroll down their page to find it, very cool!
last night our film was presented at the rover soho's art, dance film festival and was voted best film by the public out of 15 films. this feels unbelievably great and i'm really happy for this and the positive reception to the film. i had my doubts about people getting it as it's such a different and unique kind of work and story but i was wrong, the magic in it went right through the screen and the public connected to it. we're now looking to show it at different venues, any ideas are welcome.
i'm working on the lid for this box, i added a red doily print and am thinking of painting an anatomic heart in tones of gray in the middle of the doily.
the inside of the box can be seen here
this guide was written for teachers to use in conjunction with el museo del barrio's exhibition the (S) Files 007. this is the museum's biennial, i was selected to exhibit in their previous iteration of it, in 2005.
i'm sharing it here as i consider my work as an educator an important part of my process as an artist; the document belongs to el museo del barrio and cannot be reproduced without their permission.

anyone who knows me knows how much of an inspiration japanese american artist isamu noguchi has been and is for me. one of the things noguchi says about working with stone is how he would listen to the voice of the stone and wanted to see nature through nature's eyes. what this meant is how he wanted the personality of the material and its inherent qualities and characteristics to lead him into shaping it. yesterday i went back to materials; i had been working in the zines for a long time and not touched or used anything but pens, scissors and glue and i wanted to just make without overthinking things or planning what i would do so i decided to listen to the voice of paper and paint. this is the first result; the pink toned, mulit-layered background paper made me think of the layers of paint, papers and random stuff i so love in new york streets which took me to the transit cone. of course i know noguchi was not exactly doing this, i didn't really manipulate the paper, but his process was in my mind all the time i worked on this fun piece-it was my starting point.
i plan to keep working without thinking too much for a while, it's good for an over analytical person like me.
